TECHNICAL RULES FOR 4-CYLINDER
Heat races - 8 laps
B-Main(s) - 1 lap per number of cars, but not less than 8 or more than 10 laps. This race will not be run with less than four (4) cars.
Feature/A-Main - 15 laps - This field will consist of 18 cars.
All lap cars will line up at the rear of all restarts.
One (1) spin in the heat or B-Main will result in disqualification from that event at flagman's discretion. A two (2)-spin rule will be in effect for the feature. Flagman's decision will be FINAL.The Safety Inspector will decide on rules with assistance from the Rules Committee and/or Board of Directors as needed. Anything not covered in these rules will be considered illegal unless otherwise approved by the Rules Committee and/or Board of Directors.
THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS HAS THE RIGHT TO INTERPRET AND EXECUTE THE FOLLOWING RULES AS THEY SEE FIT FOR THE GOOD OF THE ASSOCIATION AND RACING IN GENERAL.
1. ELIGIBLE MODELS
A. Only front wheel drive, four cylinder, hard top passenger cars are eligible for competition. No full frame cars allowed.
2. FRAMES
A. Unaltered, stock passenger car unibodies only.
B. Rusted or damaged areas may be plated or reinforced to match original.
3. SUSPENSION
A. The suspension must be unmodified OEM and remain in stock location.
B. Springs, shocks, and struts must match side to side.
C. Must remain as factory equipped.
D. Right rear hub assembly may be replaced for safety reasons.
4. STEERING
A. Aftermarket steering column may be used, but a safety sleeve must be installed in the main shaft, or the column must have 2 universal joints between the firewall and the steering box.
B. May use quick-release steering wheel connector and aftermarket steering wheel.
C. All other steering components to remain stock, unaltered.
5. ROLL BAR
A. Full roll cage mandatory, must be four post design, consisting of a vertical main hoop, a top hoop or halo hoop, and left and right vertical front posts, (refer to left side view drawing).
B. All roll cage components must be at least, 1 ¾" x .095" wall thickness mild steel tubing.
C. No offset or laid back roll cages.
D. All vertical posts must be welded to a 6" X 6" X 1/8" thick steel plate. The plate must be bolted to an identical plate placed beneath the floor pan using a minimum of ½" grade 5 bolts at each corner of the plate.
E. Vertical main hoop must be located behind the seat and extend above the drivers head by at least 2" measured from the top of the driver’s helmet to the top of the roll cage.
F. Roll cage must have one bar side to side at dash level and one bar side to side behind driver’s seat at shoulder height. A diagonal brace is required for the vertical main hoop, (see rear view drawing).
G. Two rear support bars from top of vertical main hoop through rear firewall to trunk area are mandatory. These bars must be fastened as stated in rule D above.
H. Wing window bars required on both sides. Left wing window bar must be no more than 6" forward of the intersecting point of the left vertical front post and halo hoop, and must be perpendicular to the upper door bar.
I. Door bars are mandatory on both sides, on driver’s side locate bars flush to inside of the door, minimum of two bars, with at least two uprights between each door bar. Driver’s side door bars must be plated with a minimum of 1/8" steel plating. On right side, minimum of two door bars, which may run straight between front and rear uprights.
J. Halo bar must have one cross bar running either front to back or diagonal.
6. DRIVER’S COMPARTMENT
A. All flammable material except dash must be removed
B. Seat belts must be in good condition. Lap and shoulder belts must be approved snap-type release belts at least three (3) inches wide and securely fastened to the roll cage. A crotch or anti-submarine belt is mandatory, and must be a minimum two (2) inches wide. The shoulder belts must be mounted level with or slightly below the driver’s shoulders. At no time should the shoulder belts wrap around the top of the driver’s shoulders and mount to the floor.
C. Window net required, large mesh type highly recommended. Net must be mounted to roll cage. Net should release from top front corner with approved quick release mechanism and drop downward. Net must be up and fastened at all times while car is on the track.
D. Any roll cage bars the driver may contact must be padded, no pipe insulation allowed.
E. Center of the steering wheel must be padded.
F. Aluminum, high-back racing seat is mandatory. Seat must be mounted to the roll cage. Seat must be bolted securely with hardened fasteners, (four (4) in the bottom of the seat and two (2) in the back) 3/8" minimum diameter, with washers.
G. Interior sheet metal (minimum 20 gauge) to cover all openings-front, rear and side.
H. Rusty floor pans must be repaired with a minimum of 16 gauge steel, .060" thick.
I. No mirrors.
J. All airbags must be removed.
7. BODY
A. All doors must be welded shut at both ends and safety chained.
B. All exterior trim and door handles must be removed.
C. All headlights, fog lights, tail lights, and turn signal lights must be removed.
D. All glass must be removed.
E. Windshield screen must be no less than .063" for mesh larger than ½" or no less than .035" for ½" or smaller mesh (no larger than 1" mesh screen allowed), to cover entire opening. Screen must have 3 steel support bars, minimum 3/8" diameter. Stainless steel screening highly recommended.
F. Hood latch must be removed and replaced with 2 pins at front of hood.
G. Rear of hood must be completely sealed.
H. Trunk latch must be removed and replaced with 2 pins at rear of trunk.
I. No gutting of hoods, trunk lids, or hatchback doors. All insulation must be removed from under the hood.
J. Must have hood to start race.
K. No gutting of interior sheet metal except for driver’s door for roll cage installation.
L. Plastic wheel well liners may be removed.
M. Car number must be clearly painted on both sides, front, back and passenger side roof of car. Number size – see General Track Rules.
8. BUMPERS
A. Must have both bumpers to race.
B. Must have a tow chain front and rear for tow truck, painted a contrasting color.
C. All bumpers must be stock factory bumpers for that make and model of car.
D. Bumpers must be securely fastened to frame structure and ends must be capped to prevent hooking, no sharp edges allowed.
E. No outside protection bars or hoops are allowed.
9. ENGINES
A. 4-cylinder engines only.
B. All engine components to remain completely stock for make of car.
C. No rotary motors.
D. No turbo or superchargers allowed.
E. Maximum single cam and 4 valves per cylinder allowed.
F. An engine protest must be accompanied by a $50.00 fee for removal of the valve cover to check number of valves and single or dual overhead cams.
10. COOLING SYSTEM
A. One radiator in stock position.
B. Minimum one quart overflow bottle required.
C. Absolutely no antifreeze allowed.
D. Heater core must be disconnected.
11. EXHAUST
A. Exhaust must exit behind driver away from fuel tank.
B. Catalytic converters are optional. If the car does not have a catalytic converter, then a muffler is mandatory.
C. Muffler must be securely fastened – either welded or clamped.
12. TRANSMISSIONS
A. All transmission components to remain stock for make of car.
B. Open differentials only.
13. BRAKES
A. All wheels must have stock, unaltered brakes.
B. All 4 brakes must work.
C. Stock master cylinder must be in stock location.
D. No adjustable proportioning valves allowed.
E. No shutoff valves allowed.
14. ELECTRICAL AND IGNITION
A. OEM ignition only.
B. No traction control devices allowed.
C. 12-volt electrical system only. One 12-volt battery only, which must be in a marine box and securely fastened.
D. On/off and start switch to be clearly marked in driver area and easily reached by driver and safety crew.
E. It is recommended to have a main battery kill switch located behind the driver.
15. FUEL SYSTEM
A. Stock, unaltered fuel injection only.
B. Stock fuel tank may remain in stock location only if it is located in front of rear axle and securely mounted.
C. If stock fuel tank is behind the rear axle, it must be replaced with a fuel cell (maximum 8 gallons) located in trunk, centered side to side and set as far forward as possible.
D. No bottom-draw tanks.
E. Vent line must have check valve.
F. Fuel cell must be secured by four 1/8" X 1" straps, two in each direction.
G. Pump gas only.
H. No additives of any kind.
I. If fuel line is run through the driver’s compartment, it must be contained in a continuous piece of conduit.
16. WHEELS/TIRES
A. Steel wheels only.
B. May have racing wheel on right front only, but wheel must be no wider than 7" and the offset must match the factory offset for that year and make of car.
C. All rims must be the same diameter and offset.
D. Lug nuts must be 1" and studs must pass completely through the lug nuts.
E. No wheel spacers.
F. No wheel weights.
G. No bleeder valves.
H. Stock passenger tires only, maximum 60 series tires, no studded tires or chains.
I. No grooving, sipping or softening allowed.
J. No slicks, must be street legal tread depth.
K. No fluid in tires, air only.
L. Minimum 25 lb. air pressure in all tires before race. Tire pressure may be checked anytime the car is in the pit area. If low pressure rule violation is found while car is in the lineup, the car will be required to start in the back of the race that night.
17. WEIGHTS
A. No ballast allowed anywhere.
18. DRIVER’S SAFETY
A. A five (5) point racing harness is mandatory.
B. Snell SA 95 rated, or newer, full-face helmet mandatory. No open face helmets. General condition of the helmet and safety strap subject to safety inspector
approval. All drivers must have sufficient eye protection while on the track. Goggles or shield are mandatory.
C. Approved fire/driver suit and neck collars are mandatory. Condition of suit is subject to safety inspector approval. May be two- (2) piece. Fire retardant shoes and gloves are recommended. In place of neck collar, an inspector approved head and neck restraint safety device may be used. See General Track Rules in the front of this book.
