TECHNICAL RULES FOR CHILTON CHALLENGE CARS
Heat races - 8 laps
B-Main(s) - 1 lap per number of cars, but not less than 8 or more than 10 laps. This race will not be run with less than four (4) cars.
Feature/A-Main - 15 laps - This field will consist of 18 cars.
All lap cars will line up at the rear of all restarts.
One (1) spin in the heat or B-Main will result in disqualification from that event at flagman's discretion. A two (2)-spin rule will be in effect for the feature. Flagman's decision will be FINAL.The Safety Inspector will decide on rules with assistance from the Rules Committee and/or Board of Directors as needed. Anything not covered in these rules will be considered illegal unless otherwise approved by the Rules Committee and/or Board of Directors.
THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS HAS THE RIGHT TO INTERPRET AND EXECUTE THE FOLLOWING RULES AS THEY SEE FIT FOR THE GOOD OF THE ASSOCIATION AND RACING IN GENERAL.
IT WILL BE THE CAR OWNER AND/OR DRIVERS' RESPONSIBILITY TO READ AND FOLLOW THE RULES IN THIS BOOK. IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT IS WRITTEN, PLEASE CONTACT A TRACK OFFICIAL FOR AN EXPLANATION.
1. ELIGIBLE MODELS
A. American-made hardtop passenger cars only.
B. Rear wheel drive vehicles only.
C. 108" minimum wheelbase. Wheelbase is based upon OEM factory specifications.
2. FRAME
A. Frame must remain stock configuration.
B. Suspension mount points must remain in stock locations.
C. 1 ¾" X .095 tubing may be placed between the front frame rails.
D. Open areas of frame may be plated.
E. Frame can be X-braced, tubing not to exceed 6" in circumference.
F. Rusted frames may be repaired by using materials of the same thickness as stock areas being replaced. Repairs are for safety reasons only and must match stock dimensions.
G. Unibody cars are allowed but special safety provisions may be required and must be approved.
3. SUSPENSION
A. All suspension components must match frame.
B. Upper and lower control arms must remain stock.
C. Stock dimension ball joints only.
D. Only stock dimension rubber and neoprene bushings are allowed
E. Spindles must be unaltered OEM.
F. Springs must match side to side.
G. Shocks must be OEM type and must remain in stock location. Shocks must match side to side and have equal valving. No helper or spring-assisted shocks. Only one shock per wheel.
H. No rear sway bar allowed.
I. Front sway bar must be OEM and may be adjustable on one side only.
J. Rear trailing arms may be reinforced and must match side to side.
4. STEERING
A. Tie rods, center link, pitman arm, idler arm, and steering box must remain stock unaltered and must match frame.
B. Aftermarket steering column may be used, but a safety sleeve must be installed in the main shaft, or the column must have 2 universal joints between the firewall and the steering box.
C. May use quick-release steering wheel connector and aftermarket steering wheel.
5. ROLL BARS
A. Full roll cage mandatory, must be four post design, consisting of a vertical main hoop, a top hoop or halo hoop, and left and right vertical front posts, (refer to left side view drawing).
B. All roll cage components must be at least, 1 ¾" x .095" wall thickness mild steel tubing. Roll cage must be welded to frame and gusseted.
C. No offset or laid back roll cages.
D. Vertical main hoop must be located behind the seat and extend above the drivers head by at least 2" measured from the top of the driver’s helmet to the top of the roll cage.
E. Roll cage must have one bar side to side at dash level and one bar side to side behind driver’s seat at shoulder height. A diagonal brace is required for the vertical main hoop, (see rear view drawing). Two front support bars may extend forward from cage to frame.
F. Two rear support bars from top of vertical main hoop through firewall to trunk area are optional.
G. Wing window bars required on both sides. Left wing window bar must be no more than 6" forward of the intersecting point of the left vertical front post and halo hoop, and must be perpendicular to the upper door bar.
H. Driver foot protection bar highly recommended.
I. Door bars are mandatory on both sides. On driver’s side, locate bars flush to inside of the door, minimum of three bars, with at least two uprights between each door bar and two bars between lower bar and frame. Driver’s side door
bars must be plated with a minimum of 1/8" steel plating. On right side, minimum of two door bars, which may run straight between front and rear uprights.
J. Halo bar must have 1 cross bar running either front to back or diagonal.
6. DRIVER’S COMPARTMENT
A. All flammable material must be removed.
B. Seat belts must be in good condition. Lap and shoulder belts must be approved snap-type release belts at least three (3) inches wide and securely fastened to the frame and/or roll cage. A crotch or anti-submarine belt is mandatory, and must be a minimum two (2) inches wide. The shoulder belts must be mounted level with or slightly below the driver’s shoulders. At no time should the shoulder belts wrap around the top of the driver’s shoulders and mount to the floor.
C. Window net required, large mesh type highly recommended. Net must be mounted to roll cage. Net should release from top front corner with approved quick release mechanism and drop downward. Net must be up and fastened at all times while car is on the track.
D. Any roll cage bars the driver may contact must be padded, no pipe insulation allowed.
E. Center of the steering wheel must be padded.
F. Aluminum, high-back racing seat is mandatory. Seat must be mounted to the roll cage and/or frame. Seat must be bolted securely with hardened fasteners, (four (4) in the bottom of the seat and two (2) in the back) 3/8" minimum diameter, with washers.
G. Interior sheet metal (minimum 20 gauge) to cover all openings-front, rear and side.
H. If driver’s side floor pan is rusted, it must be replaced with minimum 1/8" thick steel 20" wide from the back of the driver’s seat forward to the firewall.
I. No mirrors.
7. BODIES
A. American-made stock production bodies only. Body must match frame.
B. All exterior trim, door handles, headlights, taillights, turn signals, and mirrors must be removed.
C. All glass must be removed.
D. Hood and trunk latches must be removed.
E. Windshield screen must be no less than .063" for mesh larger than ½" or no less than .035" for ½" or smaller mesh (no larger than 1" mesh screen allowed), to cover entire opening. Screen must have 3 steel support bars, minimum 3/8" diameter. Stainless steel screening highly recommended.
F. Front wheel wells are optional. Fenders may be moderately trimmed for tire clearance.
G. Doors may be gutted. Doors must be chained, bolted, or welded shut.
H. Rear wheel wells and trunk floor are required.
I. Aftermarket nose and tail pieces are allowed.
J. Must have hood to start race. Rear of hood must be completely sealed.
K. Hood and trunk must be pinned or chained.
L. Car numbers must be clearly painted on both sides, front, back and passenger side roof of car. Number size – see General Track Rules.
8. BUMPERS AND PROTECTION BARS
A. Must have both bumpers to race.
B. Must have a tow chain front and rear for tow truck, painted a contrasting color.
C. Bumpers must be securely fastened to frame and ends must be capped to prevent hooking. No sharp edges allowed.
D. Front and rear protection bars may be added outside the car body on the bumpers and must be constructed of 1 ¾" dia. or smaller tubing and be no wider than the frame rails and no higher than the hood and trunk.
E. Exterior rub rails may be added, but must be no larger than 1" tubing with the ends trimmed and closed off at a 45 degree angle. No sharp edges. Rub rails must be securely bolted to the roll cage and flush to the car body.
9. ENGINE
A. Engine must be from parent corporation of car.
B. Engine must be located in stock mounting position.
C. American made production V-8 engine blocks only. Must be production cast iron block. Maximum overbore of .060". No removing of casting numbers, no grinding or lightening.
D. O.E.M. stock production crankshafts, or after market crankshaft may be used. All cranks must weigh a minimum of 50 lbs. Must have stock stroke for the block being used. No knife edging allowed.
E. Forged connecting rods only. Must remain stock length for the block being used. No H-beam, titanium or aluminum rods.
F. Any flat top or reverse dome piston may be used as long as it has the stock wrist pin height for the engine being used. Valve relief may be cut into the piston. No portion of the piston may protrude above the top of the block.
G. Hydraulic cam and lifters only. Maximum lift (measured at retainer) GM .420", Ford and Chrysler .460". No mushroom lifters. Cannot alter lifter bores.
H. Standard timing chain only. No gear drives or belt drives allowed.
I. Stock production cast iron cylinder heads only. No Vortech, SVO, GT40, W2, or double hump heads. Maximum valve size 1.94" intake and 1.50" exhaust. No porting, polishing, or alterations of any kind to the inside of the head. Screw-in studs, guide plates, and poly locks are allowed. OEM non-roller rocker arms only. Ratio must be stock to engine used.
J. Must use stock unaltered OEM intake. No hi-rise or marine intakes allowed.
K. Unaltered OEM-type harmonic balancer only.
L. Must have steel oil pan.
10. EXHAUST
A. Stock unmodified cast iron exhaust manifolds only. No center dump manifolds.
B. Mufflers are mandatory.
C. Exhaust pipes are to be 2 ½" maximum diameter and must end behind driver.
11. COOLING SYSTEM
A. One radiator in stock location.
B. Minimum one quart overflow bottle required.
C. Top 180 degrees of fan must be shrouded with sheet metal.
D. Absolutely no antifreeze allowed.
12. TRANSMISSION
A. Stock, unaltered transmission only.
B. No manual transmissions, powerglide, or 2-speed transmissions.
C. No transmission cooler in driver’s compartment.
D. No lightweight torque converters.
E. No torque converters under 12".
F. No higher than stock stall speeds allowed.
13. DRIVESHAFT
A. Driveshaft must be steel.
B. Driveshaft must be painted white.
C. Driveshaft hoop is required within 12" of front u-joint.
14. DIFFERENTIAL
A. Stock, unaltered, open differentials only. Must match frame.
15. BRAKES
A. All wheels must have stock, unaltered brakes.
B. All 4 brakes must work.
C. Stock master cylinder must be in stock location.
D. No adjustable proportioning valves allowed.
E. No shutoff valves allowed.
16. ELECTRICAL and IGNITION
A. Factory type ignition, no multi-spark discharge or magnetos. Rev limiters allowed, one chip system only.
B. No traction control devices allowed.
C. 12-volt electrical system only. One 12-volt battery only, which must be in a marine box and securely fastened.
D. On/off and start switch to be clearly marked in driver area and easily reached by driver and safety crew.
E. It is recommended to have a main battery kill switch located behind the driver.
17. FUEL SYSTEM
A. Stock gas tank must be removed and replaced with maximum eight (8) gallon fuel tank or up to a twenty-two (22) gallon fuel cell mounted securely and centered in the trunk. Fuel cell or tank must be minimum of 22 gauge steel.
B. Station wagons must have a firewall of 20 gauge steel separating fuel tank from driver’s compartment.
C. No bottom-draw tanks.
D. Vent line must have check valve.
E. Fuel tank or fuel cell must be secured by four 1/8" X 1" straps, two in each direction.
F. Pump gas only.
G. No additives of any kind.
H. If fuel line is run through the driver’s compartment, it must be contained in a continuous piece of conduit.
I. Stock fuel pump only.
J. Stock carburetor or throttle body fuel injection for that model only.
K. OEM carburetors and throttle body fuel injection systems only.
L. Choke butterfly may be removed.
M. Two throttle return springs are mandatory.
18. WHEELS AND TIRES
A. Maximum wheel width is 7".
B. All 4 wheels must be the same diameter.
C. Maximum backspace is 3".
D. Steel wheels only.
E. Lug nuts must be 1" and studs must pass completely through the lug nuts.
F. No wheel spacers.
G. No wheel weights.
H. No bleeder valves.
I. Must have 4 equal size D.O.T. street legal 70 series or taller tires, maximum tread width of 7".
J. No grooving, sipping or softening allowed.
K. No slicks, must be street legal tread depth.
L. Minimum 25 lb. air pressure in all tires before race. Tire pressure may be checked anytime the car is in the pit area. If low pressure rule violation is
found while car is in the lineup, the car will be required to start in the back of the race that night.
M. No fluid in tires, air only.
N. "P" (passenger) series tires only. No truck, snow or aggressive mud tires marketed as LT 70, LT 75 or LT 78, etc.
19. WEIGHTS
A. No ballast allowed anywhere.
20. DRIVER’S SAFETY
A. A five (5) point racing harness is mandatory.
B. Snell SA 95 rated, or newer, full-face helmet mandatory. No open face helmets. General condition of the helmet and safety strap subject to safety inspector approval. All drivers must have sufficient eye protection while on the track. Goggles or shield are mandatory.
C. Approved fire/driver suit and neck collars are mandatory. Condition of suit is subject to safety inspector approval. May be two- (2) piece. Fire retardant shoes and gloves are recommended. In place of neck collar, an inspector approved head and neck restraint safety device may be used. See General Track Rules in the front of this book.
